Just as the sixth commandment forbids the unlawful taking of human life while also requiring that we do all to protect and promote human life, so the seventh commandment forbids violating God's gift of sex while requiring that we pursue a life of sexual purity. This commandment that forbids adultery moves on several levels. First in a narrow sense the commandment forbids those who are married from having sexual relations with someone other than their spouse. This is the narrow meaning of adultery. Yet, from the vantage point of the rest of the Scriptures this commandment forbids all sexual immorality including lustful sexual desires.
